Chicken wings are a very popular dish in world cuisine, known for their delicious flavor and versatility. Their origin dates back to the city of Buffalo in the United States, where the famous "Buffalo wings" were first prepared in the 1960s. Since then, they have won over palates all over the world, acquiring different names and styles depending on the region. In Latin America, this dish is simply known as "alitas de pollo" (chicken wings), although in some countries like Mexico, Colombia, or Argentina they might be called "BBQ wings" or "spicy wings," depending on the typical seasoning of each place. This particular recipe is inspired by the style of KFC, an American fast-food chain famous for its secret recipes and intense flavors, created by Todd Wilbur, a chef known for recreating iconic dishes.
How to Prepare KFC-Style Honey BBQ Wings by Todd Wilbur
Combine the sauce ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat.
Stir until the ingredients are well combined and bring to a boil.
Then reduce the heat and simmer uncovered for 15-20 minutes.
While the sauce is simmering, heat 6 to 8 cups of oil in a deep fryer to 350 degrees.
Combine the beaten egg with the milk in a small bowl.
In another small bowl, combine the flour, salt, pepper, and monosodium glutamate.
When the oil is hot, dip each wing first in the flour mixture, then in the milk and egg mixture, and again in the flour.
Place the wings on a plate until they are all breaded.
Fry the wings in the oil for 9-12 minutes or until they are a light golden color.
If you have a small fryer, you can fry 10 wings at a time.
Drain on paper towels or a rack.
When the sauce is ready, brush the entire surface of each wing with a light layer of sauce.
Serve immediately.
