Basil herb vinegar

Basil herb vinegar is a traditional preparation that dates back to ancient culinary and medicinal practices. Originating in the Mediterranean regions, this type of vinegar has become popular in various cultures for its aromatic flavor and its preservative and digestive properties. In Latin America, although herb-infused vinegar may be found under different names, basil is especially valued in countries like Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina, where it is used to enhance sauces, salads, and marinades. Depending on the country, this preparation may be known simply as "herb vinegar," "flavored vinegar," or "basil-infused vinegar." Its versatility and fresh flavor have made it a staple in many home and professional kitchens.

How to prepare Herb vinegar with basil

In a glass or stainless steel saucepan, heat red wine vinegar on the stove until it is warm, but not boiling.

Crush the basil and lightly fill clean glass jars.

Pour the warmed vinegar to fill each glass jar and seal with an acid-resistant lid.

Store in a cool, dark place and shake daily for 2 weeks.

After two weeks, taste the flavor.

If a stronger flavor is desired, strain the vinegar and repeat using fresh herbs.

Store as is or strain through cheesecloth and rebottle.

Add a few fresh sprigs of basil to the bottle for identification and visual appeal.
