Cucumber salad with basil

Cucumber and Basil Salad: History and Origin

Cucumber and basil salad is a fresh and simple preparation with roots in various culinary traditions around the world, especially in regions where cucumber and basil are common ingredients. In Latin America, this type of salad is appreciated for its refreshing flavor and is mainly known as "ensalada fresca de pepino" or, in some places, simply as cucumber and herb salad.

In countries like Mexico, Costa Rica, and Colombia, this salad often accompanies main dishes during the warm months, adding a refreshing and light touch to the meal. Basil, although not traditional in all Latin American cuisines, has gained popularity for its unique aroma and flavor, which perfectly complement the freshness of the cucumber.

In other Latin American countries, the salad may vary slightly in ingredients or names, but it maintains the essence of combining cucumber with fresh herbs and a tangy dressing. In some regions, it is simply known as "cucumber and herb salad" or another local component is added, such as chili or different types of vinegar.

How to Prepare Cucumber and Basil Salad

Ingredients: Cucumbers, Fresh Basil, Red Onion, Currants, Garlic Powder, Red Pepper Flakes, Water, Tomatoes.

Steps:

Thinly slice the cucumbers and onions and place them in a bowl.

Tear or chop the basil and mix it with the cucumbers and onion.

Pour in the vinegar and water. Use less vinegar than water, but try to use a vinegar that is a bit strong so it penetrates the cucumber well.

Sprinkle in a bit of garlic powder, approximately 1/2 teaspoon, and mix everything. Let it marinate for at least 2 hours so the flavors meld.

It keeps well in the refrigerator for days, making it a practical option to prepare in advance.

Add the fresh tomatoes at the last moment before serving to maintain their texture and freshness.
