Baked apple with maple yogurt sauce

Baked apple is a traditional dessert with deep roots in the home cooking of several countries, especially in the United States and Canada, although its popularity has spread throughout Latin America. In many Latin American countries, this preparation is simply known as "baked apple" or "oven-baked apple," standing out for its simplicity and the delicious flavor the fruit acquires when cooked. Originating from temperate regions where apples grow in abundance, this recipe has been adapted with different ingredients according to local customs, but always maintaining the core of a stuffed and gently baked apple.

In Mexico and other countries, it is often served with honey or maple syrup, which adds a sweet and traditional touch. In Argentina and Chile, it is also known as stuffed apple or spiced apple, highlighting the combination of cinnamon and nutmeg that enhances its flavor. Under any of its names, this dessert represents a perfect balance between healthy and delicious, ideal for sharing with family or as a finale to a special meal.

How to Prepare Baked Apple with Maple Yogurt Sauce

A large, firm, and tart apple is best for this recipe. Use varieties like Ida Red or Northern Spy, which offer the perfect texture and flavor. A Cortland can also be used. However, if you use a McIntosh, you should shorten the cooking time to prevent it from falling apart.

Remove the core from the apples and take off an inch of the peel from the top. Make a shallow cut through the skin around the center of each apple to prevent the skin from splitting during cooking.

Place the apples upright in a baking dish or a pie plate. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, raisins, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Spoon this mixture into the center of each apple.

Add water to cover the bottom of the dish. Bake, uncovered, at 375 °F (190 °C) for 25 to 30 minutes for less firm apples and up to 50 minutes for firmer varieties, or until the apples are tender when pierced with a skewer.

Meanwhile, combine the yogurt and maple syrup to prepare the sauce that will accompany the apples.

Finally, pour the maple yogurt sauce over the baked apples and serve immediately to enjoy a warm, sweet, and flavorful dessert.
