Maple apple pie is a traditional dessert that combines two iconic ingredients of North American cuisine: apples and maple syrup. With roots in the cooking of Canada and the northeastern United States, this pie has been a part of households for generations, especially in the fall, when apples are at their peak. In different Latin American countries, this dessert is simply known as apple pie, although some also call it apple tart with maple syrup. Its sweet flavor and characteristic aroma have made it popular in various regions, adapting to local ingredients and the taste of each place.
The incorporation of maple syrup, a natural sweetener obtained from the sap of maple trees, gives it a special touch that sets it apart from other traditional apple pies in Latin America. This combination highlights the natural sweetness of the fruit and adds a unique texture to the filling, making the pie a delicious option to share on special occasions or to enjoy after a meal.
How to Make Maple Apple Pie
7 to 8 tbsp of cold water, preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
For the crust, combine flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
Incorporate the lard with a pastry blender or with 2 knives until the mixture is uniform.
Add the water, 1 tbsp at a time, until the dough forms a ball.
Divide the dough into 2 equal parts.
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the bottom crust into a 1/8" thick circle that is 1/2" larger than an inverted 9" pie plate.
Gently place the dough into a greased pan, being careful not to stretch it.
Trim the edge flush with the pan.
For the filling, cook the apple slices in the microwave on high for 2 minutes.
Stir.
Repeat the process twice or until the apples begin to soften.
Set aside.
In a separate microwave-safe bowl, combine maple syrup and cornstarch.
Microwave for 2 minutes.
Stir.
Repeat the process until the mixture begins to thicken.
Add the thickened mixture to the apples.
Stir gently until the apples are well coated.
Let it cool.
Spoon the cooled apple filling into the unbaked crust.
For the nut topping, combine pecans, syrup, and butter in a microwave-safe bowl.
Microwave on high for 1 minute, stir, and continue cooking for 1 more minute on medium power.
Stir to break up the mixture.
Distribute the nut mixture over the apple filling.
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the top crust the same as the bottom.
Carefully place the top crust over the filled pie.
Trim 1/2" beyond the edge of the pan.
Fold the top edge under the bottom crust.
Seal or decorate the edges as desired.
Make a slit in the top crust with a knife to allow steam to escape.
Bake at 375 degrees for 60 minutes or until the apples begin to bubble.
Brush the top of the pie with maple syrup.
Continue baking for an additional 5 minutes.
