Chocolate nut bars

Chocolate nut bars are a classic dessert that combines the richness of chocolate with the crunch and characteristic flavor of nuts. Their origin dates back to American baking traditions, where this type of sweet bar became popular as an easy-to-prepare and store snack. In Latin American countries, these bars may be known simply as "chocolate bars with nuts" or similar variants, although they don't always have a specific name. In some places, you can find local versions with regional ingredients, but the essence of this recipe remains identical. This dessert is ideal for sharing at gatherings, for snacks, or as a sweet treat at any time.

How to prepare Chocolate nut bars

To prepare these delicious bars, we will begin by lining a 13 by 9-inch pan with heavy-duty aluminum foil, making sure the shiny side is facing up. We will adjust the oven rack to the center position and preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

For the base, in a small bowl we will combine softened butter, granulated sugar, and vanilla. We will mix by hand until the mixture is well integrated and fluffy. Then, we will incorporate the sifted all-purpose flour and mix carefully.

Using small spoonfuls, we will place the base mixture all over the bottom of the lined pan. With lightly floured hands, we will press the mixture to form an even layer. We will place the base in the oven and bake it for 10 minutes.

While the base is baking, we will prepare the nut layer by combining in a medium bowl the eggs, sugar, and vanilla; we will mix by hand until the ingredients are well integrated.

Once the base has baked for 10 minutes, we will remove it from the oven and place it on a rack to cool slightly. We will immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the base and return it to the oven for 3 minutes to melt the chocolate.

We will remove it from the oven again and, with the back of a spoon or spatula, we will spread the chocolate evenly. We will let it rest for approximately 3 minutes.

During this time, we will add the melted and slightly cooled butter to the egg and sugar mixture, mixing well. We will incorporate the nuts until they are evenly distributed in the mixture.

After the resting time, we will place the nut mixture by spoonfuls over the melted chocolate, making sure to distribute the nuts evenly. We will bake again for 20 to 25 more minutes, until the nut layer has a light golden tone and the edges are a darker color.

Once ready, we will transfer the pan to a rack to cool completely before removing it from the pan or storing it.

To cut the bars, we will use a large, sharp knife with a straight blade. We will trim approximately 1/4 inch from each edge for a better finish and then cut into bars of the desired size.

The bars can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for several days or in the freezer for long-term storage.
