Buffalo Wings: History and Variations in Latin America
Buffalo wings are a delicious dish originating from the United States, specifically from the city of Buffalo, in New York State. They became popular in the 1960s thanks to the Anchor Bar, where one night the idea emerged to fry chicken wings and coat them in a spicy sauce made from butter and chili sauce. Since then, buffalo wings have become an icon of casual dining and an essential ingredient at sporting events and social gatherings.
In Latin America, this dish is mainly known as "spicy wings" or "buffalo-style wings," although the names may vary by country. For example, in Mexico they are usually called "Buffalo-style wings" or simply "spicy wings." In countries like Argentina, Chile, and Colombia, they are also very popular, especially in bars and restaurants that offer international cuisine. The recipe has been adapted to local tastes, but the spicy essence and crunchy texture remain constant.
How to Make Hooters-Style Buffalo Wings
Hooters' buffalo wings are a recipe that combines classic flavor with a special touch, achieving a crispy texture and an irresistible spicy sauce. Below, we explain step by step how to prepare them so you can enjoy this delicacy at home.
Ingredients:
Butter, Louisiana hot sauce, pepper, garlic powder, flour, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, chicken wings, blue cheese salad dressing, celery, and vegetable oil.
Preparation:
Combine the flour, paprika, cayenne pepper, and salt in a small bowl.
If the wings are frozen, make sure to thaw and dry them.
Place the wings in a large bowl and sprinkle the flour mixture over them, coating each wing evenly.
Place the wings in the refrigerator for 60 to 90 minutes.
Heat oil in a fryer to 375 degrees.
You want enough oil to completely cover the wings, at least one inch deep.
Combine the butter, hot sauce, ground pepper, and garlic powder in a small saucepan over low heat.
Heat until the butter melts and the ingredients are well mixed.
Place all the wings in the hot oil and fry for 10 to 15 minutes or until some parts begin to brown.
Remove the wings from the oil and place them on a paper towel to drain.
But do not let them rest for too long, because you want to serve them hot.
Quickly place the wings in a large bowl.
Add the hot sauce and mix, coating all the wings evenly.
You could also use a large plastic container with a lid for this.
Place all the wings inside the container, add the sauce, put the lid on, and shake.
Serve with blue cheese dressing and celery sticks on the side.
